Treasure in the Dirt: The Power of Remembering
Not all progress comes from moving forward. Sometimes, growth begins when we look back. The past, even the messy parts can hold the answers to today’s questions and tomorrow’s breakthroughs. There’s treasure in the dirt if we’re willing to dig.

Sometimes, all you need to do is remember.
In a world that constantly urges us to move forward, to forget what’s behind and chase what’s next, remembering can feel counterintuitive; even dangerous. The past is often painted as a place of pain, regret, or failure.
Don’t look back,” we’re told. “Focus on the future.
While there’s wisdom in not dwelling on what we can’t change, there’s also quiet power in remembering — because sometimes, the answers we’re searching for are buried in the very past we’re avoiding.
Memory: A Map Through Uncertainty
Life rarely unfolds in a straight line. We face questions that seem new, challenges that feel unfamiliar, and crossroads where we are unsure which way to turn.
But often, if we pause and reflect, we realize we’ve been here before or somewhere close. Memory becomes a map. It doesn’t erase the uncertainty, but it offers direction. It reminds us:
What worked
What failed
How we grew
Who we became
The past, when approached with honesty and humility, becomes a source of wisdom; not a prison, but a guide.
The Dirt We’d Rather Avoid
Not everything in our past feels valuable. Some of it is messy; full of pain, mistakes, heartbreaks, and regrets. But this is where the metaphor comes alive:
There is treasure in the dirt.
Like a farmer tilling rough soil to uncover fertile ground, we can dig through the unpleasant parts of our past and discover strength, resilience, and perspective.
Even in failure, there’s something to reclaim - a lesson, a scar, a pattern, or a seed for growth.
Why Experience Matters
This truth plays out not just in our personal lives but in the workplace. There’s a reason companies value experience. A seasoned professional may not always know the latest trends, but they’ve:
Solved real problems
Navigated uncertainty
Made and learned from mistakes
Built muscle memory from failure
Experience is memory in action. It’s what allows someone to look at today’s challenge and say,
I’ve seen this before; and here’s what we can do.
That kind of insight is earned, not theorized.
What Happens When We Don't Remember
There's a cost to skipping the reflection.
We repeat patterns we never examined. We make the same mistakes with different faces and different circumstances. We wonder why we keep ending up in the same place, never realizing we never stopped to ask why we were there in the first place.
Unexamined experience doesn't automatically become wisdom. It just becomes history; neutral, unhelpful, sitting there.
The reflection is what turns experience into something you can actually use. Without it, the dirt stays dirt. Nothing gets unearthed.
Unlocking the Future
Ironically, many of us try to move forward by ignoring the past. But true progress often begins with reflection. The key to unlocking the future may lie in understanding what came before.
Remembering isn’t about getting stuck in nostalgia or shame. It’s about learning, connecting the dots, and carrying the gold forward. It’s not living in the past. It’s learning from it.
Dig Deep. Find the Treasure.
There is treasure in the dirt. Not everything you uncover will be shiny or easy to face, but it will be real and it will help you move forward with clarity and courage.
So when the present feels confusing and the future uncertain, don’t be afraid to look back.
Take a breath.
Sit still.
Remember.
You just might find the answer has been with you all along waiting to be unearthed.
